The Great Deer Debate

20 Nov

My apologies for not writing again last night.  The meeting ran very late.  It started at 7 and I didn’t get home until close to 11!  Yikes.  Either way, the issue at hand is an important one, so I was happy to be there to support.  The meeting did get quite heated.  As I said in my last post, I am strongly against hunting- for any reason- especially in a hugely populated area such as Fairfield.  However, what bothered the most is how the sub-committee was run.  A lot of the information they were spreading was totally false, and they got called out on it.  Anyway, Chris and I had to get going before it ended so I have not heard what the decision is.  There are many more ways to control the deer population than killing them, and I just hope that the sub-committee takes those into account before making such a dangerous decision.

Anyway, I took photos of my snacks and dinner last night but the photos were just too bad to post!  It gets dark here before 5 now and I just like natural lighting photos so much better!  Either way, I made roasted kabocha and okra for dinner.  Along side, I ate the dinner roll that I recieved with lunch.  Quite delicious!  Besides the okra, that is.  I just can’t get on that vegetable!

So, what fun is a post without photos?  Lucky for you I have a lot of baked treats backlogged!

Dandie’s marshmallows in hand, I opened up My Sweet Vegan, by Hannah Kaminsky, and started searching for something that will put these pillows of goodness to use.  I flipped page after page until I came across the Cookies & Cream Pound Cake.  With no cookies in hand, I subbed in the marshmallows and added a swirl of dark chocolate peanut butter right before baking.  It turned out as more of a smores pound cake!  I made two delicious mini loaves.  The pound cake base is wonderful!  In my eyes, Hannah’s recipes can do no wrong!  The marshmallow was not my greatest idea, as it overflowed over my bread pan (by the way, every time I type bread pan I think of bed pan.  Lovely thoughts, don’t you think?) and proceeded to set off the fire alarm three times.  Either way, when it was done, the marshmallows tasted very delicious.

That same day I was on such a roll that I decided to make Lemon Squares as well!  I used my trusty recipe that I posted here last year and it turned out just as good!  Oh, that reminds me.  On the top of my page I added a tab labeled ‘Recipes’ and I’ve organized the recipes into two categories- sweet and savory.  I think this is much more organized and helpful than listing them all on the sidebar.

Just as delicious as I remembered them.

Gosh, I feel my face swelling.  This cannot be a good thing.. I’ve got to get going and have this figured out.  I’m photographing a couple of my friends this weekend and I want to be normal looking when I see them!

I so agree about the natural light! Sometimes I’ll lost 60% of the motivation to cook in the evening because the pictures won’t turn out flattering to the dish. The life of a vegan blogger…

Wow. Now that may just be the best variation on one of my recipes I’ve ever seen! That sounds ridiculously and perhaps dangerously delicious!

I agree with you regarding the hunting. There is absolutely no reason to hunt animals. It’s just an excuse for hunters to go hunt.

    That pound cake looks amazing!

My dad hunts so I’ve very on the fence about it all. In my town, they don’t allow hunting so my dad has to go elsewhere. This may sound great that they don’t allow it, but instead they just kill them themselves and burn the bodies in a big pile. At least hunters take the meat and use it.

Oh wow. What a delightful variation on Hannah’s excellent recipe!

    I hope you feel better!

Hehe, it looks tiny, but it’s actually just a regular spatula! I got it at the Christmas Tree Shop.
