Day of Action
3 Mar
Geez, yesterday was a long day. I feel like I did so much more than I usually do in a day. I was biking back and forth throughout New Haven and I definitely worked up one heck of an appetite.
I greeted the morning in the most appropriate way that I could think of- with pizza. Yep. Pizza. Made by hand this morning, by me! That’s pizza dedication, right there. I started the dough as soon as I woke up, ran to the store to get vegan cheese while it rose, and made it back just in time to bake it off. For anyone who is interested, I used the pizza dough recipe from Eat, Live, Run. It was pretty good!

Goodness, it was terrific. I topped the pizza with sauce, spinach, vegan cheese, and some chicken-y product. It reminded me of this pizza that my friends and I used to get, in high school, before we went to the movies. Deeeelicious. I credit the hearty pizza breakfast (with dark chocolate for breakfast dessert) for being able to bike 40 million miles around the city yesterday.
While the pizza was baking, I was inspecting my pantry and realized that I had all the ingredients for Dreena Burton’s Super-Charge-Me Cookies! These cookies are some of my favorites, and I usually don’t have maple syrup so I never make them. The maple syrup is key here!

Just as good as usual! I made them for a pot luck that I was going to last night, but not as many as I’d hoped made it there. I can’t help myself around these cookies.
In between events and meetings that I was rushing around from, I stopped for a quite bite to eat at a coffee house in New Haven. I probably won’t ever go back here, my experience was less than delightful.

Just a mediocre bbq tofu sandwich, with a mediocre coffee, but enhanced by the deliciousness of the cookies I brought along. There were no seats inside the coffee place, so I went and sat outside on the curb. It was quite nice, but started to get a little cold after a while. But either way, I probably won’t go back here again.
I had a bunch of things do to downtown, and a couple people to meet-up with until suddenly I had an hour to kill and nothing to do, so I went over to Claire’s Corner Copia for dinner. I meant to not get something filling and only get coffee, since I was going to a pot luck, but I ended up with a sandwich. A really big sandwich. It was chipotle soy chicken, romaine, and vegan mayo on a baguette. It was very tasty, but a bit too filling.

I don’t think I need to tell you how very badly I strayed from gluten-free today. I will say that I felt awful today, probably because of that. Either way, back to dinner. It was good but too much food to have in my belly for the bike ride to my friend’s house and eventually to the pot luck and show. I also was feeling badly for spending so much money on food today! I meant to pack a lunch to bring downtown with me, but I left it in the fridge. Oops!
That’s where my photos end. There was a lot of great food at the show/pot luck! The bands were super as well.
One more thing before I go..

From DefendEducation.org:
California has recently seen a massive movement erupt in defense of public education — but layoffs, fee hikes, cuts, and the re-segregation of public education are attacks taking place throughout the country. A nationwide resistance movement is needed.
We call on all students, workers, teachers, parents, and their organizations and communities across the country to massively mobilize for a Strike and Day of Action in Defense of Public Education on March 4, 2010. Education cuts are attacks against all of us, particularly in working-class communities and communities of color.
The politicians and administrators say there is no money for education and social services. They say that “there is no alternative” to the cuts. But if there’s money for wars, bank bailouts, and prisons, why is there no money for public education?
We can beat back the cuts if we unite students, workers, and teachers across all sectors of public education — Pre K-12, adult education, community colleges, and state-funded universities. We appeal to the leaders of the trade union movement to support and organize strikes and/or mass actions on March 4. The weight of workers and students united in strikes and mobilizations would shift the balance of forces entirely against the current agenda of cuts and make victory possible.
Building a powerful movement to defend public education will, in turn, advance the struggle in defense of all public-sector workers and services and will be an inspiration to all those fighting against the wars, for immigrants rights, in defense of jobs, for single-payer health care, and other progressive causes.
Why March 4? On October 24, 2009 more than 800 students, workers, and teachers converged at UC Berkeley at the Mobilizing Conference to Save Public Education. This massive meeting brought together representatives from over 100 different schools, unions, and organizations from all across California and from all sectors of public education. After hours of open collective discussion, the participants voted democratically, as their main decision, to call for a Strike and Day of Action on March 4, 2010. All schools, unions and organizations are free to choose their specific demands and tactics — such as strikes, rallies, walkouts, occupations, sit-ins, teach-ins, etc. — as well as the duration of such actions.
Let’s make March 4 an historic turning point in the struggle against the cuts, layoffs, fee hikes, and the re-segregation of public education.

Wow, you were a busy-bee! That’s great that you’re promoting California’s day of action! So important!
I’ve been gluten-free for the past couple of days, and i notice a marked difference in both my energy and my stomach (no upset/cramps/bloating)…I’m onto this…
do you live in CA? i go to berkeley and i have a feeling tomorrow is going to be MAJOR. pretty cool to see students (and other peeps) band together for educatioN! somehow you manage to make even a mediocre tofu wrap look delectable!
Nope, I don’t live there! I’m in Connecticut, so super far away!
Yay! I’m so glad you’re promoting this, what a fantastic cause. But I’ve got to talk about that pizza! That looks like the most delicious pizza EVER! I love that you made it for breakfast, that’s what I need right now!
That’s a great cause, for sure. And pizza for breakfast (with breakfast dessert, no less!) is an awesome way to start the day.
Love, love, love spinach on pizza!
Thank you for promoting CA’s day of action! It’s such a big deal and so important for the kids – I’m a teacher in the Bay Area and we’re all up in arms about the terrible cuts that are happening. We need all the support we can get!
Your posts are great:
vegan scrumptious photos + other activism = delicious in all senses of the word.
Wow, so much deliciousness!!
I love those Super Charge Me! cookies, too. Soooo good.
Oh ! My goodness ! The pizza and the cookies are awsome ! I would eat all of them in once. And the breakfast pizza, I should think about it very soon !!!
Love mixing sugar and salt at the same time.
I agree with you, the sandwish you took away seems to be very disappointing.
So many delicious eats! I really must try those Supercharge Me cookies soon.
Your pizza looks delicious, and for breakfast! :O
Which coffee shop did you go to? I live in CT, too, and I’m down in NH a bit. I love Claire’s – I always get their humongous salad with tons of avocado. I haven’t been there in a while, but your post has reminded me that I must go soon!
I would love to try your pizza, maybe I’ll make one this weekend with a pesto sauce?
wow, that chipotle soy chicken looks absolutely amazing. reminds me of the jerk soy chicken i had at the veggie grill. so good!
My husband used to love the bbq chicken pizza and I just never thought of buying a faux chicken to make him one.
Yay for your cause. I remember even back 6 or 7 years ago my girlfriends were telling me they had a list at the beginning of the school year of things they had to purchase such as kleenex, reams of paper, glue, crayons! Isn’t it crazy, kleenex and paper reams? And this was years ago, they can’t possibly cut anymore I mean it’s so awful!
I just found your blog, and your photos are ABSOLUTELY stunning! I also love the name – so witty.
Great looking pizza! What kind of vegan cheese? Looks like it melted pretty well
It melted pretty great! Although, maybe a bit too good. It turned to a liquid-like substance, but when it cooled off a bit, gelled right back up. It’s the Follow Your Heart- Vegan Gourmet cheese! http://www.imearthkind.com/ I haven’t been able to get my hands on Daiya, but I hear wonderful things about that one!
Thanks for calling attention to this important announcement! And can you believe I’ve never made Supercharge me chookies?
hey nicole…im thinking of heading to visit some friends in new haven in a few weeks…obviously you know the best vegan spots, so can you pass on a few recs for me? my friends arent vegan but they are adventurous and willing to cater to my needs…if you know (good) places that are veg friendly and for meat eaters too that would be great. and also whatever your fave dining spots are.
miyas sushi! definitely miya’s sushi. they have tons of vegan sushi options and lots of nonvegs too. it’s the only sustainable sushi place in this side of the country, i think! i’ll email you today or tomorrow but i just wanted to make sure i got miyas in!
